How to install the torsion spring into your deck discharge shield

Step 1: Holding the torsion spring in your hand, position so the straight leg of the spring is on your right and then move the bent leg so it is over the top of the straight one. 

Step 2: Flip the discharge shield upside down and insert the straight leg of the spring into the opening on the shield. 

Step 3: Allow the spring to rest while bringing the pin through the side of the shield, continuing through both the spring and the rest of the shield until the pin is flush with the shield and extended through the other side. 

Step 4: Take the mount, position so the pivot is on the left side, and slide it over the pin. 

Step 5: Take a standard screwdriver and position it under the mount but above the torsion spring. Let the blade of the screwdriver come under the bent leg of the spring then with steady pressure, position the bent leg behind the locking tab of the shield mount.

Step 6: With the spring now installed, take the whole shield assembly to the corner of a workbench and hold in a vertical position.

Step 7: Using the flat surface of the bench as leverage, place steady pressure on the shield pin to align it with the hole on the mount and then push it through the mount. 

Step 8: Lastly, install the cotter rings into the shield pin retaining holes and you’re set.
